How to Easily Assess Your Roof’s Status

The roofing system is easily one of the most important parts of any home. After all, it is one of the first lines of defense against the elements. As a homeowner, it’s your responsibility to keep an eye on your roof to ensure it’s still in good condition. However, some homeowners can’t tell what is normal to see on a roof and what isn’t, leading to false assessments on the homeowner’s part.

So, how do you assess your roof’s status? Here are some tips.

What Isn’t Normal to See on a Roof

When you’re inspecting your roof, there are a few tell tale signs of damage about which you need to be concerned. One of these are blisters and cracks on your roof. While unpopped blisters can be left alone for the time being, popped blisters can expose the asphalt and leave your roof vulnerable to water penetration, which will require immediate repairs. On the other hand, deep cracks on your roof’s fiberglass mat should also be inspected as they can compromise the system’s water-shedding abilities and leave it susceptible to leaks.

Buckling is another major cause for concern for roofs. As with blisters, this is a sign that your roof doesn’t have the sufficient amount of ventilation, or there is a flaw in the initial installation process.

What Is Normal to See on a Roof

On the other hand, there are also a few kinds of damage that is normal to see on a roof that has some years behind it. For instance, curling and minor cracks are common phenomena in most shingles and aren’t usually considered a defect by most professionals. This is because they’re a usual side effect of age. Stains like black streaks on your roof are another common thing to see, especially if you live in a humid area. This is called algae growth, and these don’t affect the water shedding abilities of your roof.
